[Addiscombe Recreation Ground (Fotopic).] <More photos>

Addiscombe Recreation Ground is basically a large field which has three marked out football pitches in season. It also has a children's play area, four tennis courts, two basketball/netball courts and a fenced off grass area which I'd hazard a guess might be for letting dogs off the lead. There is a path all around and is a row of flower beds alongside the courts.

The recreation ground has also appeared on old postcards as 'Addiscombe Park' and locals often call it 'Bingham Park'.

Location

The recreation ground is surrounded by the back gardens of housing on Northampton Road, Carlyle Road and Sefton Road, and on the north side by St Mildred's church and the new retirement apartments built alongside it.

The main gate is on Bingham Road and there are also entrances in the south-east corner from Sefton Road and the south-west from Northampton Road.

History

I understand that the land for the Recreation Ground was purchased in 1905. A postcard showing the park is dated as 1901–1906 by one source which, if reliable, would suggest that it was laid out pretty quickly too, and indeed I have now read that it was officially opened late in 1905. It is certainly shown on the 1911 O.S. map.
