When I created this site in 2007 I noted that there were quite a few sites around about various aspects of Addiscombe. They had some very useful information on them which is the really important thing but the quality varied quite a lot. There were neat looking sites and rather untidy ones. There were well maintained sites and there were forgotten ones. There were sites that were easy to navigate and ones that were painful. There did seem to be a core of sites that look liked they once all linked to each other well but seemed to have got a little out of step with each other. There were also two or three sites that started up but no longer existed, though they were sometimes linked to.
I'd been toying with the idea of having a bash at a site myself for a while as I thought it might inspire me to learn a bit more about the town and also have a walk round. I also wanted to explore using Fotopic in conjunction with a site to handle the photos (horses for courses) and also I wanted to test out a new hosting provider as the one I'd been using for years hadn't moved with the times with regard to what you get for your money.
So here we are. I registered the URL http://addiscombe.org.uk/ for the site (I've previously used .co.uk for this sort of site but .org.uk is no more or less valid and what am I to do if I create sites that fall outside the declared purposes of all the UK second level domains?). However because the site doesn't have dedicated hosting it would be better to link to it using the actual URL http://addiscombe.anidea.co.uk/ as it helps out search engines in the absence of 301 redirects.
I noted back in 2007 that I didn't really know where this site was going, if anywhere, and it has to be say that nowhere much has proved to be the most accurate assessment over the next three years. I don't think it will ever evolve in quite the way my Lower Edmonton site did as that had the advantage of there being no other sites covering the same ground or even a small part of it. You never know though.
