Copyright

The vast majority of the photos and images used on this site are my own and I have copyright on them. However I do use a small number of older images for historical interest. As a rule I tend to use images that I believe are out of copyright and any created or published before 1945 should fall into that category. However it is possible that some may be subject to 'revived copyright'. If any of the photos are indeed subject to copyright I will be pleased to add appropriate copyright notices or remove the photos on the request of the copyright holder. Regardless of copyright I will add appropriate authorship credits if I am made aware of them.

A good, simple guide to the current situation with copyright is available online at the UK Intellectual Property Office. My understanding of copyright legislation is that postcards and images mass produced using various printing processes are treated in the same way as photographs but I could be wrong.

Use of images

If you wish to use any of my own images for any purposes then I would like you to ask me first. I am unlikely to refuse as long as you acknowledge my authorship and copyright. The majority of images on this site are hosted by Fotopic and any direct linking of images will not impact on me directly so it is up to you if you want to do that (just bear in mind that I make no guarantees that the photos will remain on Fotopic and in the same place).

If you are interested in any images that are not my own, such as the older photos, I invite you to make your own call as to whether or not it is appropriate to copy or link to them.

Copyright notices and dates on images

At the time of writing, the images hosted by Fotopic are presented on web pages together with a date and copyright notice. These should be correct for my own photos but for other other photos and images the date should be disregarded (unless supported by the other text on the page) and the copyright notice should not be considered as applying to the image itself.
